    1. The woman is black
How does Susan Hill present woman in black in the book woman in black?
The first impression the reader gets of the woman in black is that she is a suffering woman who is worthy of our sympathy because of her unnatural state:
“as though she had been a victim of starvation,” this quote clearly implies that the woman is in an horrible state and that we should feel melancholy for her . Furthermore hill’s use of the word “victim” suggests even more that the reader should not judge her because she doesn’t look that way because she wanted to, she looks this way because it has been forced upon her. “The effect of the illness made her age hard to guess” : Hill uses this description to reinforce the idea that the woman in black is a supernatural figure , making the reader deem her mysterious as well as being sympathetic for her .

You explore the subtlety of the character well and I like the way you've integrated a quotation into your analysis however I would still like you to pull more from your main quotation (which might mean that you need to use a longer quotation).

  37. The first impression we get of the woman in black is that she is a very ill woman who is near death. We see this from the quote “the thinnest layer of flesh was tautly stretched over her bones,” this implies that she is very skinny and weak as she can hardly look after herself. Hill uses the word “tautly,” to emphasise how little of her there is. She also uses the phrase “over her bones,” to give the reader an idea that she is so skinny and ill that you can see her bones through her skin. Hill implies that the woman is close to death which might hint to the reader that the woman in black could be a ghost. Therefore the first impression is one of illness and sympathy.

  38. The first impression of the reader gets of the Women in Black is that she is a character who’s not been caring for herself.”She looks dreadfully unwell.” This implies that Hill describes the mysterious woman as ill or very sick of something that’s happened to her. The word “Dreadfully” mean that she’s not a pretty sight to look at, maybe something’s wrong with her appearance. Her appearance also described as something dreadful, “her eyes seems sunken back into her head” is what Hill describes as something that’s abnormal ,something you don’t see every day. The first impression is therefore something dreadful and abnormal and someone who doesn’t care for herself.

  39. The first impression the reader gets of the Woman in Black is that she is a character that deserves our attention:
I know this because in chapter four the quote “A woman, who must have slipped into the church... who stood several rows behind and quite alone, very erect and still, and not holding a prayer book,”
Clearly implies that Kipps feels almost threatened by her presence and very judgmental about her beliefs. Hills use of the word “slipped” tells us that she is a sneaky, cunning, silent person that likes to keep to herself. Similarly Hills use of the phrase “without a prayer book” clearly indicates that, she neither doesn’t care or she isn’t religious.

  40. The reader’s first impression of the woman in black is that she is a sick character and the reader is to sympathise her. "she was suffering from some terrible wasting disease." This implies that from her appearance it is shown to Kipps that she is highly unwell and he starts to show sympathy towards her. The use of the word “suffering” implies Kipps’ feeling of sympathy is quite strong because he feels that she is helpless towards her “disease”. Also, Hill’s use of the word “wasting” implies that she is scarce. Furthermore in the beginning of the book Hills mentions ghosts. This show that by using the word “wasting” it is showing that the woman in black is not fully there. The reader knows this but Kipp’s doesn’t.

My first impression of the woman in black is her appearance is hideous and frightful.” I could scarcely bear to look at her” from this quote we can clearly infer the woman in black isn’t the best looking person around but the world “scarcely” take her look a stage further, hills lets us know that this woman is so hideous to the eye kipps could only bare to look at her for a few seconds.

  42. My first impressions of the woman in black are quite sceptical due to the fact that she is extremely pale giving me the indication that she is unquestionably ill ,we can imply this from the quote ‘ who perhaps was only a short time away from her own death.’
From this quote Hills portrays the woman in black as a tall, ill looking person making the reader feel sympathetic for her. Hills use of the word ‘death’ creates an image in the reader’s mind of how pale and diseased she looks.

    The Woman in Black

The first impression the reader might get is that the woman has a death-like figure. This becomes clear in the quote “Even the swift glance that I took of the woman showed me enough to recognise that she was suffering...her eyes seem sunken back into her head.”
This shows that the woman in black has appeared to Kipps as a woman who may be dying, waiting for her funeral. Hill’s use of the word “swift” implies that the quick movement of his look was more than enough to know that she looked like she was decaying. Hill’s may be foreshadowing to the reader that something sinister might happen as previously in the book Kipps had said he will write down his ghost story.
Hills goes further to describe the woman in black in detail so the reader knows how life drained she looked. “But the skin and, it seemed, only the thinnest layer of flesh was tautly stretched and strained across her bones”

  44. The first impressions the reader receives 0f the mysterious Woman in Black is that she may be trying to attract attention from Kipps as if trying to tell him something:
“I could scarcely bear to look at her”, this quote tells the reader that she is a woman in distress, that is “only a short time away from her death”, but Hill her mannerisms to be the cliché haunted elderly woman. The descriptions given about the Woman in Black is that she contrasts an eerie sense of death and lost hope, but Hill represents her as a never leaving ghost.

  45. In the novel, The Woman in Black we get introduced to a woman who gets stated as the Woman in Black. The first impression that the reader would get form her is that she is someone who seems like someone who kind of unwell and diseased.
    “She looked dreadfully unwell”
This shows that Kipps would have thought that something dreadful had happened to her, and that she seems as she is in a unstable position. In this quote Hill uses the word “dreadfully” , what the word makes the reader think is that the extent to which she seems sickened is very far and that she might also be struggling in the way how she is right now. What the reader also sees is that Hill use the word “looked”. This could show that Kipps may had not been sure if she was actually “unwell”. This implies that she may be someone who has a figure to hide and that something else could be hidden.

  46. The first impression that the reader gets is that the women in black is a character that the reader must give sympathy. “I had heard of certain conditions which caused such terrible wasting, such ravages of flesh,”
This clearly implies that Kipps feels she is a very unwell unhappy woman who he would rather give sympathy and help rather than judge her by her appearance. The word ravages suggest to me that her skin is destroyed and shattered tearing away. The phrase “such ravages of flesh2 shows that she has not taken care of her self .

  48. The first impression the reader gets of the Woman in Black is that she is a character with some sense of physical beauty that has been covered up through time.
"Of a not inconsiderable form of beauty" p. 58
This implies that Kipps does indeed find her beauty intriguing to some extent. Hill uses the word “inconsiderable” as an adjective that should lead us as the reader to think of her beauty (not unimportant or insignificant) as expired. Despite the enclosing mystery of this woman Kipps still sees some sense of beauty in this enigmatic character. This expired look that the Woman in black has foreshadows an event later on in the novel.

  50. The first impression the reader gets of the Woman in Black is that she is a character that should be pitied:
“She was suffering from a terrible wasting disease.” This quote implies that she must of had to deal with a lot during her life because of this disease. The reader would feel sympathy for her to the fact this illness killed her. Hill’s use of the word ‘terrible’ shows that this thing ruined her life causing her not to enjoy the nature of life. When reading this quote the audience may feel that this illness affected her so much that she had to hide behind closed door; locking away her life because she didn’t feel a part of the rest of the village. Hill’s use of the word ‘wasting’ also shows the reader that this sickness that people dreaded took away all the happiness in her life and gave her sorrow. When describing Mrs Drablow Hill’s uses long descriptive sentences so the reader will be able to imagine how she was lying down in her coffin and also be able to see her ‘pale’ face. The first impression is therefore one of a mystery, sympathy and pity.

The first impression the reader gets of the Woman in Black is that she’s terrifying:
"yes, yes, with the skin stretched over her bones, I could scarcely bear to look at her..."
This implies that Kipps is terrified because he could only see glimpse of her, since her skin was stretched over her bones. The use of Hills word “scarcely” implies shows that he struggles having a look at her, using the “scarcely” also tells me that Kipps seemed intrigued by the weird looking woman and would’ve like to see another glimpse of her since she had been looking uncharacteristic.

  52. The first impression the reader gets of the woman in black is that she’s a character what is very weird and mysterious:
“She was dressed in deepest black, in the style of full mourning that had rather gone out of fashion”
This tells us as the readers that she is a very dark orientated person and is wearing a very old outfit not of the 20th century which may seem weird to many. Instead of seeing the side that it’s a funeral he is thinking about her outfit which implies he is more interested in what people are wearing then having his full attention on solely on the funeral. Hill uses the words 2deepest black to which tells the reader she is covered in black head to toe but a deep black tells us it’s not a regular black. This implies that even though jkipp hast met her he’s seen her as rather mysterious.

  61. I think that the best answer to the question, "What is the reader's first impression of the Woman in Black?", is Kai's because he completed all the targets:
AO1= answer the question with a full sentence
    AO2= choose a relevant quotation
AO3= begin explanation with "this shows..." or "this implies..."
AO4= analyse at least one word from the quotation
    AO5= analyse a structural device feature (e.g. sentence length/punctuation/foreshadowing)
AO6= use "Hill" and "the reader" throughout
AO7= use a high level vocabulary
Therefore, i believe Kia's is the best answer.

  70. I think the best paragraph id out of me and teakilla. I spoke about what fashion she had which is the first thing you notice in a person to judge. Teakillas one was full of detail and answered the question best. Kai can get a sticker for the name

  71. HOMEWORK: I think the best paragraph is ejiros because she used all the AO points and gave a detailed description of the Woman in Black

  73. Theodore's paragraph was the best: he answered the question at the beginning then used a relevant quote to back his paragraph up. Theodore used "Kipps" and "the reader" and "implies". He analysed a specific word and explained the structure of that word- however, there were not as many short sentences. I would grade this a C/B.

  74. I think Kai's paragraph was the best becase he used Ao1 the point in the right way, he also uses the words "implies" or "this shows" to analize it in more deapth. He also uses "Kipps". He also analizes a specific word to show us that there is a powerful meaning, not only in the phrase or quote, but in one word.

  75. Truthly I think Ejiro's paragraph is the best,in my opinion, because she has clearly used the AO's in good fashion. Therfore, meaning that Ejiro's work is the best.
