  8. The first impression the reader gets in the Woman In Black is that she is a friend of the deceased Mrs.Drablow:

“A woman , who must have slipped in the church.”
This implies that this woman, knowing that she would be shamed for befriending Mrs.Drablow, came to the funeral and Kipps probably thinks of her than a friend of Mrs.Drablow than just a mourner. Hill’s use of the word “slipped” implies that she came undetected by anyone, telling me that she didn’t want to be seen by anyone, so Hill chose that word to represent how fast she came inside. Also, Hill’s use of the word “must” means that the woman sought it to be her priority making the reader think, just like a friend would, she would attend the funeral for a friend. The first impression is therefore a person who is friend of Mrs.Drablow who was thought to have no friends.

The first impression the reader gets of the Woman in Black is that she is a very weird character.
“...stood several rows behind and quite alone, very erect and still, and not holding a prayer book.”
This implies that the Woman in Black is differentiated from the usual person. Hill’s use of the word “alone” implies that she may be sad or down but even so, she stands “erect” suggesting that she may not care about the socialism she upholds. In addition, Kipps says that the woman in black is “not holding a prayer book”. From this, we can infer that she may not be religious, mysterious, other than, linking back to the first inference, that she may not have been approachable to have ever received one.

    1. This is a really interesting and well written interpretation Tyrell, well done! You have a really nice writing style and, as you refine it, this will really help your grades.

  10. The first impression the reader gets of the woman in black is that she is sort of like a zombie: "...swift glance I took of the woman showed me enough to recognise that she was suffering from some terrible wasting disease..." This clearly implies that Kipps sees the woman in blacks’ appearance to be some sort of zombie. Hill’s use of the word “wasting” implies that her body might be gruesome, stuff could of be sticking out of her body in order for him to see her body as a dying body. Similarly, Hill’s use of the word “disease”, whilst implying to the reader that she is ill or is dying, might cause suspicion to the reader that the woman in black could be a zombie or a ghost...

    1. Your interpretation is good Bryan however your reliance on the "zombie" idea is a little informal- try to think of a more sophisticated way to express this. That said, excellent progress from the last one, well done.

  11. The first impression the reader gets of Woman in Black is she is a very mysterious and eerier character:
“...swift glance I took of the woman showed me enough to recognize that she was suffering from some terrible wasting disease...”
This implies she isn’t a healthy and typical human. She is described as very ill and un-appealing with her facial features. This creates an empathy for the reader to feel sorrow for the woman. The reader is empathising with Kipps.
